The Movies, located at the Haarlemmerdijk is the oldest cinema in Amsterdam and a household name to its inhabitants. In addition to the monumental screening room from 1912, the cinema consists of three other rooms, all decorated in a classic Art Deco style. The Movies mainly shows art house films, documentaries and the better Hollywood productions. The Movies was founded in 1912 under the name Bioscoop Tavenu. After a number of name changes, the current name was chosen in the 1970s by Pieter Goedings, the founder of The Movies. He expanded the cinema from 1 to 4 screens and introduced the well-known art-deco interior.
