Joep:

Blue Spring (which refers to the springtime of life) is my favorite film of all time. It is not a film with a clear or traditional storyline. Instead, it follows a group of teenage boys at an all-boys school in Japan, all coming from a lower social class. They are growing up in a society that places a huge emphasis on achievement and success, yet they feel like they have very little to look forward to. As they approach the end of their final year, they each begin to lose their way in their own way. For them, this final year represents their last taste of real freedom before they are forced to enter the adult world.

What I find so powerful about the film is its bleak view of the future. The characters seem trapped between childhood and adulthood, unsure of where they belong or what awaits them. There is a sense of emptiness and aimlessness throughout the film that really resonated with me when I first watched it during the COVID-19 pandemic. I think that is a big part of why the film stayed with me for so long.

Beyond the story and its themes, Blue Spring is also an incredibly beautiful film to watch and listen to. The cinematography creates a raw and melancholic atmosphere, while the soundtrack adds even more emotion to the scenes. It is a film that captures a very specific feeling of youth, freedom, loneliness, and uncertainty. For me, that combination of atmosphere, music, and storytelling is what makes Blue Spring so memorable and why it remains my favorite film of all time.
